During the visit the Minister heard first hand about the experiences of some of the young people who attended the summer creative workshops.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister said: “Making learning experiences relevant to the needs and interests of young people is a challenge. The AmmA Centre successfully blends the educational experiences of formal and informal learning and I welcome the opportunity to celebrate the creativity and skills of our young people here tonight.

“Creative learning centres ensure that a high level of expertise is made available to young people both inside and outside school. Digital technology is their social outlet, their communication tool, their learning medium and possibly a career for many. If it is not a sole focus for an individual’s employment, it will certainly continue to play a large part in how this generation will learn, work, relax and socialise in the future.”

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure provides funding for the north of Ireland’s three Creative Learning Centres which presently operate from the Nerve Centre in Derry, the AmmA Centre in Armagh and Studio ON in Belfast.

The Minister continued: “Creative Learning Centres provide innovative learning opportunities in digital media, key skills for a modern economy. The ethos of the Centres is very much ‘learning by doing’ and this approach makes learning fun, thereby engaging children and young people, especially from those from hard to reach groups. Arts and creativity have the power to engage and entertain young people and enhance social skills and increase confidence.”

In conclusion the Minister congratulated the AmmA staff and tutors for delivering high quality tuition to the young people. She also congratulated the SELB for promoting the work of the centre as an essential part of enriching the young peoples’ education experience outside of school. The Minister also commended the beneficial partnership between the Marketplace Theatre and the AmmA Centre and thanked the Marketplace Theatre for hosting the event in its prestigious auditorium.
