BFI Film Academy Showcase Celebrates Emerging Film Talent in Armagh
The Market Place Theatre Studio in Armagh was filled to capacity on Thursday 15th January as families, friends, and teachers gathered to celebrate the achievements of young filmmakers at the BFI Film Academy Showcase.
The showcase marked the culmination of the BFI Film Academy Short Course delivered locally by The AmmA Centre, which ran from the end of September through to mid-December. Delivered on Thursday evenings and weekends, the course brought together 23 students with a shared passion for film and storytelling.
There are 49 BFI Film Academy Short Courses delivered across the UK and offer young people aged 16–19 the opportunity to gain practical filmmaking experience, industry knowledge, and professional mentorship. The courses act as an important stepping stone into further specialist training and careers in film, television, and the wider screen industries.
Throughout the programme at the AmmA Centre, participants worked towards an OCN qualification in Film Production, gaining hands-on experience across all stages of filmmaking. The students were divided into two production crews, each tasked with developing and producing a short film to a professional standard. Both films premiered on the night, showcasing the creativity, technical skill, and collaboration developed over the duration of the course.
The evening was a resounding success, with a full house providing enthusiastic support for the young filmmakers as they saw their work on the big screen for the first time.
The event also featured guest speaker John Reavey, a BFI Film Academy alumnus from 2016. John shared his journey from a Film Academy student to successful director, travelling worldwide producing short films and directing film work for major social media influencers and high-profile footballers and teams. His story, words of wisdom and passion offered inspiration and insight into the career pathways available within the screen industries and encouraged all students to reach for their dreams and never give up!
